WHAT IS MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable and often debilitating disease that affects the central nervous system.  It is estimated that 2.5 million people in the world have MS.

MS results from when the immune system mistakenly attacks a white fatty substance known as Myelin.  Myelin coats the nerve fibers in the central nervous system.  When Myelin is attacked, it can cause a variety of neurological problems.  The cause of this mistaken attack is unknown.

Symptoms of MS vary and affect everyone differently. The symptoms and disease course is unpredictable. Symptoms may come and go, stay the same, or get worse at any given time and without any notice. Symptoms may include muscle stiffness, spasms or weakness, poor coordination or loss of balance, cognitive problems, vision loss, blurred or double vision, numbness or tingling, partial or complete paralysis.

Currently there is no known cause or cure for MS. Ongoing research is essential for both adults and pediatrics. We must continue to learn, research, and develop programs for the people and their families that live on a daily basis with this devastating often debilitating disease.
